A Message From minori Regarding eden* plus mosaic

ev039a01

We’ve received a lot of questions from fans regarding how mosaics and censorship will be handled in our upcoming release of eden* plus mosaic from minori. Today, we’re proud to present their answer to this question.

We will retain [the mosaics].

This goes for the future as well, but fundamentally, so long as there is the possibility of [this edition] being reverse imported into Japan, we cannot refute the possibility that our company, minori, will be forced to be legal responsibility in such a case, so this choice is one we make to avoid those legal risks.

Please understand that people in Japan are just as sensitive about the depiction of genitalia as those outside of Japan are sensitive to the depiction of lolis.

However, in regards to the future (which we don’t know whether this will happen or not), if we do end up developing adult products for release only in Western markets, then we will abide by the ethical standards of the nation [those products] are first released in, and release those products without mosaics.

Note: Due to production issues, eden* PLUS MOSAIC will initially be released with the original mosaics intact as-is. Once minori finishes development work on their current Japanese release, it will be updated to feature Reduced Mosaics like ef -a fairy tale of the two.

Cartagra_CG10

Cartagra is the first game I’ve tested for MangaGamer so far that wasn’t a nukige. It’s also the first game ever released by Innocent Grey, who later went on to create the Kara No Shoujo series which some of you may have already played. This game was originally released in 2005 for the PC, so it’s pretty old at this point.

But it’s been ported to a new engine which brings some very nice enhancements. The most obvious one is that the text rendering has been improved with the use of vector fonts. It looks very nice and crisp even when the game is running full screen, unlike most VNs where the text looks really blurry when it’s been scaled up. It would’ve been especially bad in this game because it originally only ran at 800×600. The CGs unfortunately do not get any kind of resolution bump, but they do still look nice. I’m a big fan of Innocent Grey’s art style and it also happens to scale up well because there aren’t many hard edges in the drawings in the first place. The other big addition is that snow in the background is now animated. It’s a small but nice touch. Also, while the game has no menu option to resize the game when it’s running in windowed mode (it’s always 800×600), it is possible to pass command line arguments for it start up at a different resolution for something in between a small window and full screen.

This is an example of both the fancy snow and the creepy takoyaki salesman.

This is an example of both the fancy snow and the creepy takoyaki salesman.

But the more interesting part is the actual content of the game. Set in 1950s Tokyo, the basic premise is that our protagonist Shugo is a private detective asked to investigate both a mysterious string of recent murders and a girl who disappeared ten years ago. There’s a fairly large number of choices as far as VNs go, and it’s not entirely obvious which route they’ll lead you down. There are a few romantic routes, a few bad ends, and one true end which Kara no Shoujo follows from. Speaking of the bad ends, if gore bothers you at all this is not the game for you. Even in the routes that aren’t bad ends, this is a very violent game and there are very graphic depictions people in various states of dismemberment. Overall, the game is very well written and translated and I enjoyed all of the routes. There’s a nice balance of suspense, mystery, horror, comic relief, romance, and plot twists to keep it all interesting. I like most of the characters except your little sister Nana, who is both very creepy and obnoxious.

Hatsune and Kazuna are both good characters.

Hatsune and Kazuna are both good characters.

While Cartagra is certainly not a nukige, it is still an eroge. Shugo lives in a brothel, and ends up sleeping with the prostitutes working there on several occasions. I haven’t counted, but I think there’s somewhere in the vicinity of fifteen sex scenes throughout the game. They’re all pretty vanilla; unlike the previous games I’ve tested there are no especially unusual kinks here. Like most MangaGamer titles, everything is uncensored. I think all of the girls are hot, but Kazuna is probably my favorite.

Shugo would probably not be a huge fan of the Boob Wars games due to his inability to pick a side in the flat chests vs big breasts battle.

Shugo would probably not be a huge fan of the Boob Wars games due to his inability to pick a side in the flat chests vs big breasts battle.

To wrap things up, I think Cartagra is a great game for anyone who likes either the horror or mystery genres. It’s an especially great game for anyone who has previously enjoyed Kara no Shoujo, since a few of the main characters here reappear as more minor characters in that game. It is very much not a great game for anyone bothered by gore or extreme violence.

Hi! Cafe here with another translator’s corner for Space Pirate Sara. I’m going to be covering the h-scenes featured in Space Pirate Sara today.

I guess the first thing to note would be the differences between Space Pirate Sara‘s and Armored Warrior Iris‘s h-scenes. Sara has much less interspecies sex than Iris, so if you’d rather see girls getting plowed by aliens and what have you, Iris fills that niche quite well.. On the other hand, if interspecies stuff isn’t your thing, Sara has plenty of human focused h-scenes. Also, as I noted in my first post, Sara has fewer h-scenes in general than Iris. However, it makes up for this with a bit more focus on the plot and longer h-scenes. Another thing to note is that there’s a larger cast of girls with h-scenes than there is in Iris.

sara_TC_image_3

Another difference is the amount of futanari the game features. I’d say futa is so prevalent in Sara that it makes up a good third or more of all the h-scenes. I’m not complaining, but if futa isn’t your thing you might be put off. In addition, there’s far less tentacle action in Sara than there is in Iris.

sara_TC_image_2

Anyway, I hope everyone is looking forward to Space Pirate Sara. If you’re at all interested in seeing additional Lilith games in the west please consider picking it up.

Cartagra ~Affliction of the Soul~ is the second game I’ve tested for Manga Gamer and the first title by Innocent Grey I’ve played in full and boy, let me tell you, it was quite a ride. A twisted, gory, and absolutely fantastic ride, and all things that happen to be right up my valley of visual novel taste.

Cartagra is the prequel to Kara no Shoujo, a game I picked up during the beginning of my visual novel escapades years ago and, as many Manga Gamer frequents know, a murder mystery game, just like Cartagra. So when I was told that I was going to be beta-testing not only an Innocent Grey game, but the prequel to Kara no Shoujo, I was stoked and even that’s a severe understatement.

102914_0950_TestersCorn2.png

You play as Takashiro Shugo (or just Shugo, if you will), a war veteran and former police detective who now finds his home in a brothel by the name of the Yukishiro in the small town of Ueno. One wintery day, Shugo’s former boss, a man named Arishima Kazuma, visits Shugo in his humble abode to tell him of recent happenings. The usual: life, love… Oh yeah, and the trio of serial slayings going down in Ueno.

102914_0950_TestersCorn3.png

(Good to see you too, buddy.)

Somehow, our dear protagonist has avoided hearing about the news of the string of killings in THE SAME TOWN HE LIVES IN. Arishima is the lead detective on this case, and it’s a doozy to say the least. But never mind the killings, dismemberment, and cannibalism of the three victims, because Arishima contacted Shugo for a completely different reason; he has a different request for Takashiro Shugo, private eye. Arishima asks Shugo to take on the case originally bestowed up on him of finding a missing girl by the name of Kozuki Yura in the town of Zushi which just so happens to be the very place Shugo evacuated to when the war began.

If that wasn’t coincidence enough, hold on tight because it gets even better. Not only is Zushi a town that Shugo holds very strong negative feelings toward, but the missing girl, Kozuki Yura, is—wait for it—Shugo’s ex-lover. Good lord, we’re not but ten minutes into the game by this point.

Shugo arrives in Zushi via train and who does he find waiting for him there but a crapload of snow, snow, and more snow and the very person he is supposed to be looking for:

(Golly, what a coincidence!)

(Golly, what a coincidence!)

… Just kidding. As if it’s ever that easy. Who Shugo actually runs into is not Yura but Yura’s bubbly and positively adorable twin sister, Kazuna, an actress aspiring to someday perform on stages in Tokyo. She swoops in just in time to rescue Shugo from dying of possible hypothermia while searching for the Kozuki household and brings him to the family’s mansion to meet with Kozuki Keiichiro, Yura and Kazuna’s father.

He gives you the rundown of what the hell’s going on: Kozuki Yura was injured in an accident ten years ago and was almost completely confined to her room due to her injuries. In the confusion that followed after the war, Yura slipped out of her room and has been missing ever since.

But why look for her now, after half a decade of being gone? Despite the fact that, according to Keiichiro, he could care less about Yura, someone apparently spotted the girl in, you guessed it, Ueno. Kazuna instantly latched on to that hope that her twin sister was still alive and this hope is the sole reason Keiichiro called someone out to Zushi. Kind of weird, but otherwise a pretty standard missing person’s case. But here’s the zinger:

Kozuki Yura is already dead and Kozuki Keiichiro wants Shugo to prove to Kazuna once and for all that her beloved twin sister will never be returning.

(What an asshole, right? This guy even looks like an asshole.)

(What an asshole, right? This guy even looks like an asshole.)

This is how Shugo’s job of finding (or rather not finding) Kozuki Yura begins all while the mystery of the bizarre Ueno serial slayings lingers ominously in the background. But remember? That has nothing to do with you.

Then the killings strike close to home.

While I wish I could go into more details, that’s as far as I’m going because any further and I’m sure I’ll wind up spoiling something and that’s something you definitely don’t want to do with this kind of game. (Or any kind of game, for that matter.)

(Murder mystery and cute girls? My kind of game.)

(Murder mystery and cute girls? My kind of game.)

If I could pick one thing to single out that I liked about Cartagra… I probably couldn’t single out one thing, to be honest. Cartagra was not a game I initially expected to grow so fond of, but against all odds, I fell in love with this title so much so that I would gladly play it a second time to go over details I missed.

It’s a game that never failed to surprise me. I can’t say I’m the best at mystery-type games. Seriously, imagine a person running around in circles hitting themselves on the head with a mouse and you have an accurate depiction of me playing mystery visual novels. Regardless, there were times when I thought I figured out what the hell was going down in small town Ueno but did I actually manage to figure everything out before everything was revealed? Hell no, not even close. Just when I thought I solved the murders and the mystery of Kozuki Yura, Cartagra threw another giant plot twist at me and I was back to square one. A little frustrating, sure, but that’s the fun of the game.

(Another fun aspect of the game is how hopelessly goofy Shugo is. He's not much help, but at least he's lovable.)

(Another fun aspect of the game is how hopelessly goofy Shugo is. He’s not much help, but at least he’s lovable.)

The mystery I loved, the atmosphere the game set was beautifully orchestrated, but my single most favorite thing about being able to test this game was the colorful cast of characters that made this game so damn interesting. You had your typical visual novel tropes—the mischievous little sister and the ditsy but huggable female lead—but even the tropes it gave it turned on its head plus some.

(The "mischievous little sister" in question who has a gross fascination with murder and forcefully assists Shugo in his detective adventures.)

(The “mischievous little sister” in question who has a gross fascination with murder and forcefully assists Shugo in his detective adventures.)

Cartagra has definitely landed itself on my “Favorite Visual Novel” and I suspect will remain there for a long time to come. It’s a game that gets shit done and cuts no corner all while providing an awesome visual novel experience for those reading it

I’ll sum this up the best I can: do you like mystery? Do you like murders? Do you like girls kicking ass and looking awesome while doing it? Then do yourself a favor and play Cartagra! You won’t regret it. ★

eden* – Introductions

island
Looks like it’s that time again: time to talk about a new title! I suspect anyone that’s been following us for a while has expected/anticipated this one ever since “ef – the first tale” was announced. Well, your wait is almost over! eden* will be out soon, and today, I’m going to introduce you to the plot and a good chunk of the main characters!

eden* is set in a pre-apocolypse. Approximately a hundred years ago, the first scientists noticed a meteor on a crash course with Earth that couldn’t be stopped. This happened in a time of diplomatic tensions, and the ensuing chaos lead to a war which wiped out approximately half the world’s population. Following this, a unified government was established, and a plan initiated to save mankind from extinction: The Earth Evacuation Project. To help develop technology to evacuate the entire population of Earth and meet a near-impossible deadline of a hundred years, super-intelligent humans with perpetual youth and incredible longevity were genetically engineered. They were called “felixes”.

sion
Many felixes were genetically engineered, but even for these modified humans that had mental prowess far beyond that of any ordinary human, one in particular stood out. In the present day, nearly a hundred years later, she is known as “The Supreme Felix: Sion”. She is seen by many of the savior of mankind, and maybe even as a messiah. At the very least, many believe her to be, even though very few people in the entire world have ever seen her in person.

ryou
It is at this time that Warrant Officer Ryou Haruna, a former member of The Special Forces, is assigned to a particular research facility. When he arrives, he notices it’s unlike any research facility he has ever seen or heard of before. It is stationed on an isolated island hidden against a solid wall of rock. On the inside, it looks like the sort of mansion an aristocrat might own. Adding to that impression, he and his new partner, Warrant Officer Lavinia F Asai, are greeted by something of a rarity in these times where most of the population has already been evacuated to space: a self-proclaimed maid.

triple
Ultimately, this as-of-yet unnamed maid leads him to his new commanding officer, Major Inaba. For a major, he seems to be a rather loose fellow. What’s more, it seems as though he and Ryou have a bit of a history together… Ryou doesn’t let this get to him, accepts his initial paperwork, and is told the next day he will learn the details of his new assignment.

inaba
So, what is the purpose of this research facility Ryou has been stationed at? Who could this maid be? What happened between Ryou and Inaba in the past? These are all things you’ll have to read to find out! Or, you could probably get a few more hints from my followup posts… Starting next week, I will do more detailed write ups about the cast. This post said quite a bit, but there’s more to tell!

If you preorder eden* or eden* PLUS+MOSIAC from the MangaGamer website, you will also receive a free steam key for the all ages version upon release! You can also watch for the Steam release here if so desired.

Every sale of eden* goes toward the minori fundraiser to help minori and MangaGamer bring over all new chapters of minori’s “Supipara” in English first! Reserve your copy today and show your support!

1_Intro

Today we’re proud to present our first Tester’s Corner for Space Pirate Sara from wavedash!

On its surface, Space Pirate Sara may look identical to the hundreds of sci-fi or fantasy-themed nukige out there. And on the surface, it kind of is. Several female protagonists unwillingly engage in hardcore sex involving weird things (weird to some people, at least) like orgies, tentacles, monsters, tentacle monsters, etc.

The sex in Space Pirate Sara is pretty much what you’d expect. What makes the game stand out is how the sex is contextualized and presented.

2_Futa_censored

Having first-person narration by the female protagonist for 99.99% of the game changes how H-scenes are presented, for the better in my opinion. Many of them do not even have a (human) male participant, although a third of them feature futanari (hermaphrodites). So if you like futa (or female protagonists), this game is for you.

A female narrator also affects how the story is portrayed. For a quick run-down: Sara is searching the galaxy for a certain sword and discovers it is being held at a vacation planet. When she and her comrades raid the castle of the planet’s Baronesses, they are defeated and captured. During the day, Sara is trained to be a sex slave; during the night, she assists her second-in-command in breaking into a vault holding the sword.

3_Tower

The story isn’t exactly Oscar material. However, the use of a female narrator changes how the story is portrayed. Compare to other nukige: in Valkyrie Svia, two valkyries must be “conquered” else the world be destroyed; in Slave Witch April, a haughty witch is “conquered” by an abused apprentice. In games like these, there is no real conflict between the girls’ “training” and the story. In fact, they coincide: you want the valkyries to succumb because (a) the world ending is bad and (b) it’s hot; you want the witch to succumb because (a) she’s a giant bitch and (b) it’s hot.

Source: Slave Witch April

Source: Slave Witch April

This is not the case in Space Pirate Sara. There are two conflicting, incompatible sides. On one hand, you have Sara, who is searching for a special sword. You empathize with her because you learn about her strengths, her weaknesses, her background, her goals. On the other hand, you have Sara’s enemies, who want to “train” her. You empathize with them because, once again, it’s hot. This dichotomy makes the story unpredictable and engaging.

Perhaps one of the biggest selling points is Space Pirate Sara‘s artist. Seura Isago is a prolific doujinshi manga artist, and also does a bit of hentai manga. The art speaks for itself. But I will also contribute some words: it’s fantastic.

Source: Seura Isago's Pixiv - http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=9871

Source: Seura Isago’s Pixiv – http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=9871

Unrelated tangent warning: I’ve always felt that a large portion of hentai art can be categorized as either vanilla or hardcore. And I do mean purely the art style, not the content. I have a hard time putting my finger on it; the best I can do is that vanilla art has body proportions and facial expressions more similar to a traditional non-hentai anime/manga style, and uses ahegao less often or less extremely.

Space Pirate Sara uses what I would call hardcore art. However, the content is par for the course compared to most sci-fi or fantasy nukige. There’s nothing too extreme. The hardest-core it gets is one scene with some brief asphyxiation.

I’d be remiss not to mention the anime adaptation of Space Pirate Sara. The art and story are better in the eroge, as you might expect. The adaptation is great by hentai anime standards, but still exhibits symptoms of insufficient animation budget. The art style is different in the anime, and different in a bad way. There are also various changes made in the adaptation process that affect how most characters are portrayed. For example, in the eroge, Sylia is used as a foil to Sara’s strength and dignity, but in the anime, she’s more of a fellow prisoner. The anime also barely touches on how terrifying and powerful the twin Baronesses are.

6_Twins_censored

The anime also cuts out a few H-scenes, six by my count. Five of which I would have preferred to see animated over some other scene in the hentai, but three of which are alternate endings. Also missing are some of the original voice actors and the puzzles guarding the Baronesses’ vault, most of which are quite interesting. And frustrating.

7_Puzzle

At the end of the day, Space Pirate Sara isn’t a fantastically revolutionary eroge. It does enough differently from its competition to be fresh and interesting, and everything it doesn’t do differently is done well. All while doing great in the H department as well. What can I say? It’s hot.

Header
Welcome back, loyal readers! Today we’re going to give you some info on the differences between the all age and 18+ versions of eden*, as well as a sneak peek at the eden* PLUS+MOSAIC 18+ scenes! Be advised that this post contains mild spoilers.

As many of you may know at this point, eden* was released in Japan as an all age title with an optional 18+ expansion that added some depictions of violence (most notably the inclusion of blood in certain scenes) and nudity to the main story, as well as additional scenarios which include H scenes for each girl in the story. MangaGamer is following suit, offering both versions on our site, and the all age version on Steam!

Here you can see one such example from the main story.

Here you can see one such example from the main story.

The added scenarios which lead into the H scenes all add a certain something to each character’s story: A look into Ryou and Sion’s life together after certain events transpire:

Elica deciding to be Ryou’s maid for the day…

ryouelica
Lavie coming at Ryou at full force…

And a watery scene where Ryou realizes he might like Maya a little more than he originally thought…

What’s that you say? I didn’t show off any of the H CG yet? Well, we don’t want to just give them ALL away, but we’ll give you a couple freebies…

7_PuzzleToday we’re proud to present our second Tester’s Corner for Space Pirate Sara from Murderous Int!

Do you like when your ladies are packing that something extra? Do you like it when breasts gush motherly milk? Do you like humiliation and training from demented loli twins? Do you like obscure puzzles? Well you might like Black Lilith’s Space Pirate Sara.

Sara is a space pirate and captain and is looking to get a hold of the treasured sword of Bernstein. To do so she needs to get information on its whereabouts. Being a pirate, she has no qualms to the methods she uses in achieving this–through kidnapping and slave trading Sylvia, a knight for a Duke, to gain information on the swords location, to using many other underhanded methods. That is the life of a pirate. Yet in the process of getting closer to the sword Sara gets the tables turned on her and she ends up as the plaything of the ageless, demented, Baroness twins, Karin & Cecil. Will she get the sword of Bernstein? Why is it important? Can she escape from Karin & Cecil? What is the mystery behind their ageless youth?

Time to get out the sun tan lotion.

Time to get out the sun tan lotion.

The story is intriguing all on its own, with Captain Sara having a fleshed out past and character which develops during the story progression. The same is also true for her Vice Captain Hans, who also plays a unique role outside of the whole overall erotic story sections. The story kept me engaged to see how all this would all play out. One unique aspect to this particular game is the puzzles you have to solve when trying to retrieve the sword. Each puzzle is a different riddle and an enjoyable challenge, bringing something more to the erotic tale.

Don't look into their eyes?

Don’t look into their eyes?

Now the sex is what we are all here for, right? This game has you making three choices at set intervals. The choices break down into: humiliation in various ways, usually involving public locations, all to disgrace Sara; transfigure, which is body modification adding a penis to Sara’s body; then finally a choice for overwhelming carnal pleasure. Personally I enjoyed the humiliation and pleasure paths’ sexual content, due to my lack of interest with futa. Watching Sara getting an enema and squirting it out was very enjoyable. Another scene was taking on a well endowed lizard man and loving it!

Getting held down by the lizard man!

Getting held down by the lizard man!

Overall, I enjoyed Space Pirate Sara more then I initially thought I would. It has a few more elements in its favor then just full out erotic content. The puzzles, Sara’s own story, and the mystery of the twins, Karin & Cecil, added more depth to the fictional world and made scenes that much more enjoyable. So, thanks to Kurisu and the other writers in this department. The voice work was well done throughout, with credits to VA roles going to Sara by Kotone Hirokawa, Sylia by Nana Aikawaa and, Karin & Cecil by Ryu Andou. The futa content plays a strong part in this, so if that is something that you’re into you may really enjoy picking this up. If you have enjoyed the previous two titles MangaGamer released from Lilith, this should be enjoyable. I hope many people who purchase this enjoy the game and continue supporting MangaGamer and Lilith in future collaborations.

This is the final of the three games MangaGamer licensed from Lilith and I’m highly grateful for getting the opportunity to help with this process through beta testing. I hope people add their own thoughts and feedback once they play through this game, and also mention what game they would love MangaGamer to pick up next from Lilith to continue bringing more of these dark themed erotic stories to the western world.

SpacePirateSara_CG10Today we’re proud to present our third Tester’s Corner for Space Pirate Sara from spirkality!

Hello folks! Space Pirate Sara is my first game with Manga Gamer, and I’m excited to share it with all of you. Picture this: a lovely, sexy lady pirate named Sara is out and about, just trying to do some decent pirating and reclaim her family’s honor, and maybe get in a fight with a sexy knight named Sylia, when BAM! She is captured by the evilest of evil twin sisters and made to be their sexual slave. But that’s not as bad as it could be, because the twins just so happen to have her family’s long lost treasured sword.

Look at them. So cute. So evil!

Look at them. So cute. So evil!

“But spirkality,” you might ask. “What about the SEX??”

Well, let me tell you, my friends! This game certainly delivers on that front! For every day Sara is captured by the twins, you get to choose one of three ways to have her trained in their sexual service: Humiliation, Transfiguration, and Pleasure. Whatever you choose will lead to a different type of scene, where you can watch Sara slowly yield to the twins, and enjoy herself despite her very best efforts. While only one is listed as humiliation, each of the scenes offers some level of humiliation for Sara. Her unwillingness to bend to the twins comes through more strongly in some scenarios than in others, but every scene has some element of her pride causing her some intense humiliation.

Such humiliation

Such humiliation

For me, the best part about the sex scenes in this game was the incredible variety. Want to see Sara gangbanged? You got it! Tentacle porn? Absolutely! Interested in a little girl on girl action? Of course! Enemas? Bestiality? Public humiliation? Ovipositing? Why not! The more the merrier! This game kept up a steady stream of weird sex, with enough variety that there should be something for everybody.

Dick tentacles, my personal favorite!

Dick tentacles, my personal favorite!

The game intersperses its sex scenes with little riddles that you try to solve every night, during Sara’s downtime from sexual training. I will admit- I was absolutely terrible at the riddles. Even with my inability to solve them, they were still a fun break from the action, and it was interesting to see Sara not only as a sexual dynamo, but also to get a glimpse of her as a pirate captain.

All in all, this game isn’t super heavy on story, but there are several creepy story elements throughout that hold the attention. If you’re looking for something with a variety of sex scenes and a hot blonde protagonist, I couldn’t recommend anything more highly!

eden* – Translator’s Corner

We’re back again with a word from our translator for eden*, DS55. More after the jump!

Hi everyone! Are you all as excited for eden* as we are? I’m DS55, the translator who has worked on the ef series, the Shuffle fandisks “Tick! Tack!” and “Really? Really!“, and presently working on Bokuten. Today, I’m going to give you a bit of a rundown on the history I had working on this title, and some of the interesting facts along the way.

The final backup of the old NNL site I had lying around, complete with broken header due to missing images. This shot is sure to bring up some memories for some, laughs or Internet rage for others...

The final backup of the old NNL site I had lying around, complete with broken header due to missing images. This shot is sure to bring up some memories for some, laughs or Internet rage for others…

As many of you who keep up with visual novels might know, I used to be in NNL, a fansubbing group that really loved its minori games. Way back before I got involved with MangaGamer, I was working on eden* as a fan project. Originally we were just going to translate the demo as a bit of an April Fools joke, but it quickly grew into a very real project that everyone in NNL was excited about, and that the Internet got in a bit of an uproar about since we weren’t the only fan TL group at the time working on it. It was actually pretty amusing since, at first, everyone thought we ripped off the other group’s scripts until they started actually comparing them. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths the Internet will go to.

You were never forgotten, anon!

You were never forgotten, anon!

Leading up to the events that got the majority of NNL officially involved with MG (that I touched on a bit in my ef – the latter tale translator’s corner), I had this title roughly 60% translated. Once we signed on with MG to release ef, I figured eden* would come along eventually, and as I wasn’t flooded with work when I first joined MG (we’ve grown a lot in the past four years!) I worked on this in my spare time. I ultimately finished the all ages version, or approximately 75% of the game, and at this point waited since there was no guarantee we’d get PLUS+MOSAIC as well.

The last file of the game. Yup, had it since 2010...

The last script of the game. Yup, had it since 2010…

So, as you may have guessed from the “four years” bit, it has taken a while to reach this point. I’ve had that nearly-completed translation sitting on various hard drives (I think I would’ve gone crazy if an HDD crash made me lose all that hard work) for ages. Pretty much anyone on staff who isn’t brand new would be able to tell you I’ve wanted to work on this title that entire time. A month or two before our Otakon announcement, we got into talks with minori, and eden* was given the green light. At this point, I immediately decided to go over my translation with a fine-toothed comb to make sure the script was the best it could be.

MayaH
Following that, I got busy translating the 18+ add on content, and narrowly finished just before Otakon. It was a close call, but I was very happy to be able to announce that the translation was finished concurrently with the acquisition announcement.

supipara1
Leading up to Otakon, our super-manager Evospace was busy talking to minori about the Supipara campaign and our plans to use eden*‘s proceeds to finish it. I’m sure everyone has heard about it at this point (if only from the other blog posts), but if you haven’t, please check out the campaign page here. If eden* is successful, Supipara will be my next project after Bokuten is complete.

I never thought the day would come that I’d get to work on Supipara, much less see the whole story completed in visual novel form.  I hope all those minori and visual novel fans in general out there will buy a copy. I know I’ll be buying copies for family and friends (the all age version for family, haha). This time around, -every single purchase counts.- Even once we reach our funding goal to get the first or second Supipara chapters translated, every additional sale will go towards funding the creation of all new chapters in the series. If eden* and Supipara both do well… who knows what the future might bring? Don’t let me down guys! Show minori you do care about seeing more of their games released, and that there is a strong western market for visual novels!

You can follow me on Twitter (@DS55_) where I’m sure I’ll be making occasional status updates and other fun stuff going forward. If you’re so inclined, you can pre-order or buy eden* (depending on when you’re reading this) from MangaGamer or Steam, or the 18+ version, PLUS+MOSAIC here. Hope to see you again in the future writing a Supipara translator’s corner!

Look Back at 2014

ss+(2015-01-24+at+01.19.48)

This past year has been pretty eventful here at MangaGamer, so let’s take a look!

In the past year we’ve managed to publish 15 new titles to the English market–something that most would have never believed to be possible before our company came around–and we’ve managed to maintain our standards of high quality translations for every one of those releases. A change few of us ever expected for Visual Novels in 2014 though, was Steam. After Higurashi and Go Go Nippon were Greenlit on Steam, the sudden and instant success of the latter allowed our company to pave the way for Visual Novels on Steam and set a precedent our fellow Visual Novel publishers have chosen to follow. Even now, our own all-ages release of Cho Dengeki Stryker still stands as the only full-length Visual Novel localized for English release on Steam, and we have a lot of plans to continue adding high-quality content with volume to our Steam store in the future. So on that note, let’s take a look at what topped our digital charts this year!

Paradise of Imoutos

  1. Imouto Paradise
  2. Ultimate Boob Wars!!
  3. Demon Master Chris
  4. Hypno-training My Mother and Sister
  5. Eroge! ~Sex And Games Makes Sexy Games~
  6. Cho Dengeki Stryker
  7. Armored Warrior Iris
  8. Valkyrie Svia
  9. Really? Really!
  10. Cum on! Bukkake Ranch!

Well, the trend from last year continues, with the nukige pulling strongly across the board. Our hopes from last year were rewarded, and every single one of our releases from Lilith placed on the charts. Little sisters definitely took the crown this year, with Imouto Paradise performing on par with Eroge and Boob Wars from years before! Perhaps most notable in this year’s ranking is the fact that many of last year’s titles are refusing to give way, with Eroge, Bukkake Ranch, and Demon Master Chris all returning to claim another spot this year. Also, while it didn’t manage to make the top ten, Cartagra did manage to climb up to 11th place.

capsule_main

Interestingly enough, however, has been the performance of our games on Steam. Go Go Nippon would clearly check in at #1, having sold several times more copies than Imouto Paradise. Meanwhile, Cho Dengeki Stryker, and eden*–despite its brief accidental launch–would both easily rank in at #2 on their Steam sales alone.

What about things on the hard copy front?

07

  1. Kara no Shojo
  2. Eroge! ~Sex and Games Makes Sexy Games~
  3. Boob Wars
  4. Tick! Tack!
  5. ef -a fairy tale of the two.
  6. Shuffle!
  7. Koihime Musou
  8. Go! Go! Nippon!
  9. Harem Party
  10. DEARDROPS

Wow! Most of these are returning titles, back to claim a spot again this year! It’s great to see that so many of them are still selling strong. Eroge, ef, Tick Tack, and Koihime are the only new claims on 2014’s top ten, though most of those were new to the year. It’s quite a pleasant surprise to see ef claiming such a high spot when it only had pre-orders to compete against the rest. Many of our other Limited Editions (such as Kara no Shojo) are now sold out, so if you’re interested in getting a Limited Edition of ef, you’ll want to act fast, because they’re selling quick! We’ve managed to sell out of quite a few other hard copies as well. Some we’ll be discontinuing, like Da Capo, and others we’ll be looking into potential reprinting for, like Kara no Shojo and Boob Wars; so be sure to grab your copy before it’s too late!

In other news, conventions have also continued doing well for us, and you can expect to see us coming back to all the usuals. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again as Anime Boston and Sakuracon roll around!

402_event

Here at home, our localization team has been growing too, in order to keep bringing new games into the mix! We’ve added three new translators including bad end and koestl, multiple new editors including ritobito and Nellie, and lastly blackdragonhunt, who’s serving as both programmer and translator. It’s been lots of fun for us, working with all these new people who bring a lot of talent and passion into the company. Everyone here at MangaGamer remains dedicated to the quality of our work, and we have a lot of things in store for 2015 as well, but that we’ll talk about in our next post!

In the meantime, don’t forget to fill out our licensing survey for a chance to win a free copy of eden*:

Well, now that we’ve finished summing up 2014, it’s time to talk about projections for this year, isn’t it? We have a lot of awesome things bubbling in the works, so read on!

001

This past year we’ve churned out consistently high quality releases every month, and we don’t plan on hitting the brakes any time soon. We’re starting 2015 off big with our upcoming release of eden* and eden* PLUS MOSAICYet, what really makes this release so special is the minori fundraising campaign. For the first time ever, Western fans have a chance to make the impossible possible and help fund the development of Supipara, an all-ages Visual Novel, for an English-first release! Everyone here at MangaGamer and minori are really excited about this prospect and the potential it holds to change the Visual Novel industry as whole. Some of the hurdles may be high, but we hope every one of our fans will help spread the word and make this campaign a success. The release is drawing very near, so tell everyone you know, and let’s all help make the impossible a reality!

ev_kou_t01_21

Ready for release after that is another title that’s the first of its kind in many years–No Thank You!!! As our very first foray into BL, we’re very excited to see all the support we’ve received for this game, particularly from our female fans. It’s coming very soon! We promise!

PrincessEvangile_CG03

We’ve also got Princess Evangile ready for release soon, but we have an important announcement regarding this one as well–after getting approval from Moonstone, we will be making Princess Evangile All-Ages available on Steam as well! We’re all quite excited to be bringing another full-length Visual Novel to Steam, and we hope everyone will enjoy it too. It’s going to be the longest Visual Novel to ever hit Steam when it launches this Spring! (The adult version will be available for $44.95, and the all-ages version available for $34.95. As usual, buying either version on our website will earn you a Steam Key as well.)

op_t01

So what else is in store? Well, we’ve been making a lot of steady progress on all of our currently announced titles, and work on Kara no Shojo 2 and euphoria is progressing quickly. With luck, we should be able to have both of these titles out this summer. We also have a fairly steady line of hard copies planned and slated for printing, so keep an eye on our feeds as we send out more information throughout the year.

Axel w Glasses
As far as upcoming titles go? Well, this year holds potential for quite a few surprises. Our localization team is currently plugging away at all of our announced acquisitions so those will be filling our 2015 release schedule up pretty tight, but there are a few things currently underway behind the scenes. We’ve heard rumors that bamboo might be planning something, and talks with a certain particular company are already underway, and we’re making several approaches of our own at a few new and interesting targets, but it’s too early to say much yet. This summer could bring some exciting news, though! We also plan on adding a few more titles to our catalog from our existing partners, but it wouldn’t be any fun if we spoiled which ones now, would it?
